Total Collected for the Missions
$33,159.87
Throughout Lent of 2022 over $33,000 was raised by parishioners to assist the missions.
On June 4th, 2022 our parish served three rural parishes (St. Bridget in Oilton, Sacred Heart in Bruni, and St. Agnes in Mirando City) in Webb County. St. John the Baptist sent teams to help with building and grounds restoration, door to door ministry, family catechesis, youth ministry, and spiritual renewal with our priests offering multiple confession times throughout the day for all locations. A team of hospitality volunteers prepared and served meals throughout the day for all who attended and we had teams in adoration both at the mission site and in Corpus Christi praying for the success and safety of the mission.
Below is information from the mission trip including a letter of thanks in the photo gallery from the Most Reverend James A. Tamayo, Bishop of Laredo.
Our parish has adopted St. Bridget's Mission in Oilton, Texas (Webb County) as our Lenten work of mercy and charity this year. Our task is to fulfill the Lord's expectation that all of his disciples work for the spread of the Gospel each according to their vocation and talents.
St. Bridget's Mission is located in Oilton, a town of a population less than 200. The majority of the citizens are descendants of old settlers and ranchers and mostly identify as Roman Catholic. The chapel is a mission of mother parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Hebbronville and is administered by the Franciscan Fathers from Mexico. The mission church itself is old and in dire need of repair. The effect of the pandemic has resulted in a handful of people who attend Mass on Sundays. As a result, the needs of this small community is great.
Our task that we will complete by this summer is to do our part to encourage the residents of this small South Texas town to return to the Church and motive their young families to take an active part in their mission church. To accomplish this we will encourage them spiritually, assist them with formation in the faith and funding some much needed physical improvements through our generosity.
During the Season of Lent we will be inviting all parishioners to make financial contributions to donate to this mission. We also intend to plan and prepare ourselves to organize some spiritual and formational events for their parishioners. We plan to make a parish wide visit to St. Bridget's sometime in early June and we will provide information on how everyone can assist us in making a significant impact on this little mission church.
More information will be forth coming as we continue to organize our efforts. In the meantime please consider what you can contribute and what you could offer to our mission effort. Please pray that our efforts and work will produce great fruit in the lives of our brothers and sisters there.
